Be Proactive When It Comes to Your Personal Safety
"We tend to be a reactive society - waiting until something bad happens before we try to correct the problem. This must change. It is time to take a proactive positive approach to life - including enhancing and maintaining our personal safety."

This article series is intended to provide information and strategies to make you Smart & Safe! The content of future articles is not intended to create paranoia or fear - feelings that result from a lack of familiarity with situations, environments, people, or anything unknown. Quite the opposite . . . I want to increase your level of confidence by providing information and education - removing or reducing unfamiliar situations, environments and interactions.
There are new statistics reported every year by various organizations that should compel each of us to want to take the necessary steps to improve our personal safety. However, I do not want to use these statistics to influence you. I want you to recognize and understand the personal and social community benefits we can all experience by making ourselves a little more mentally, emotionally, environmentally and physically aware. Future columns will also address these facts!
There is a Psychologist by the name of Abraham Maslow who developed the Hierarchy of Human Needs pyramid. The most basic fundamental needs for human beings are physiological - food, water, air. These "needs" form the base of the pyramid. The next level up on the pyramid, ranking second in importance behind physiological needs, is "Safety." We all need to feel safe!
