After all the Next Generations, Voyager, the Borg, William Shatner's Priceline commercials and that one movie where they went back in time to save the whales, who would have thought that Star Trek would still be such a hot brand?
The newest film goes back-to-the-beginning to chronicle how such a unique but effective group of personalities came to be on the original starship Enterprise. Each of the key crew members featured an extraordinary expression of personality that marked them, but also was their key strength. What others had deemed as flaws and faults -- like Scotty's out-of-the-box thinking -- were demonstrated to be assets of the highest value in many of the show's extreme situations. So what does this nostalgic remake of a science fiction TV show have to do with your health? I'm so glad you asked
"More energy, strength, positive attitude and lower levels of body fat don't just happen -- you can't keep doing the same things, eating the same things and expect a different body; it doesn't work that way. "
When I was a kid playing Star Trek with my friends, no one wanted to play the Expendable Crewman. You know, the characters who would beam down with the rest of the crew but never make it back to the ship? They always lacked the Lead Character's exceptional qualities, never standing out in any way making them dispensable and expendable. Look around you -- poor health, overweight and a lack of energy are the 'Rule' rather than the exception for most people today.
The boldness 'to go where most people haven't gone before'-- eating healthy, working out often and getting to bed at a decent hour -- is sadly lacking and prevents us daily from accomplishing our 5-Year (and longer) Mission. Let's take a page from some of our key characters' biographies to see what kept them victorious over Romulans and safe from Klingons for 43 years.
Every great story needs a Great Beginning. In the film, George Kirk, First Officer of the U.S.S. Kelvin, sacrifices his life to saves those of his wife and son-to-be James Tiberius Kirk. The great story of your family must begin with determining to sacrifice a little time in front of the TV, at your computer or involved in your hobby -- not so 'great' a sacrifice, but something you must 'give' to 'get' the role of Captain of your own Ship.
More energy, strength, positive attitude and lower levels of body fat don't just happen -- you can't keep doing the same things, eating the same things and expect a different body; it doesn't work that way.
What made Captain Kirk a standout cadet and officer was that he was 'different;' status quo, 'just like everyone else' and 'good enough' were not part of his vocabulary. If we're planning on being worthy of our own TV series, action figures or even one movie, we're going to have to do what our friends, coworkers, maybe not even your own family will embrace right away.
Eating better, sweating on purpose and trying to lift things that others might think of as 'work' are exactly what will help you rise through the ranks from a body you'd like to keep Private to a physique others will consider Generally Major.
"This amazingly healthy new body may seem as distant as a science fiction future, but if you'll just begin, the future is already one day closer than before. "
The second character introduced in the film is Spock, whose father who was Vulcan and his mother was from Earth. This mix of Logic and Emotion made him a target for bullying and subject to the tyranny of low expectations. Unless you're a professional athlete, Olympian or simply one of those folks who has never had an ounce of body fat no matter what they eat, like the rest of us you'll have some physical limitations. Maybe it's a little more body fat than average, less energy than you'd like or perhaps you've never felt very strong at all, but no matter which of these disadvantages you're facing, nothing can stop you from reaching your stars if you just keep reaching for them.
Many a healthy person started out not-so-healthy, lots of thin people used to be thicker, fast people were slower, strong people had been weaker. When they started, their goals, stellar performances and great bodies seemed as far away as another galaxy, and understanding nutrition, exercise and wellness were like learning an alien language.
In the movie, Captain Pike told Jim Kirk he could potentially have his own ship after serving 4 years in the Space Corps. The future Captain Kirk told him, "I'll do it in 3."
This amazingly healthy new body may seem as distant as a science fiction future, but if you'll just begin, the future is already one day closer than before. If you keep waiting until the 'right' futuristic exercise machine or space-age weight loss supplement arrives, your prospects of the body you've always wanted might as well be in the 23rd Century -- you'll never see it.
Let more and better health be your Final Frontier, get ready to explore strange new foods, to seek out a new Life and new occupations for your time. Are you ready to boldly go where no one you know has gone before? Then let's start your Trek.
