Word:    Lymphedema

Short Definition:
  Swelling caused by excess fluid.

Definition:
A condition in which excess fluid collects in tissue and causes swelling. It may occur in the arm or leg after lymph vessels or lymph nodes in the underarm or groin are removed or treated with radiation. It is estimated that the condition occurs in 15% to 20% of breast cancer patients who have lymph nodes removed. If not treated it can cause an increased risk of skin breakdown and infection and a decrease in the mobility of the arm or leg.
