Definition:
High fructose corn syrup, HFCS, is a common ingredient for sweetening soft drinks, juices and processed foods. It is very abundant in modern times and very unhealthy. As its name suggests, it is derived from a seemingly innocuous source, corn. But it is the high concentration of this sweetener that makes it unhealthy.

HFCS contains 14% fructose, much more than regular corn syrup. It has an adverse effect on metabolism, because the body doesn't utilize fructose well especially at such highly concentrated levels.

HCFS may also promote weight gain because it behaves in the body more like fat than glucose, the blood sugar derived from other sweet foods

HFCS also appears to elevate triglycerides in men, the blood fats that increase the risk of heart disease.

In summary, read processed food labels and minimize your intake of HFCS.
