What Is The Tao of Movement?

A Pilates Method Adds the Spiritual Dimension to Show Us 'the Way'

By: Susan Mitchell

Editor's Note:
People are often looking for time efficiency where they can get fit and calm their emotions. Therefore mind/body forms of exercise are growing in popularity, especially with women and boomers seeking better physical and mental health. Susan Mitchell answers the call and has taken the movement one step further to now incorporate the spirit.

Ms. Mitchell has not only developed a new mind/body/spirit method but has recently written a book on it called the The Tao of Movement. She developed it form her popular precursor the "Mitchell Method of Pilates". Originating in New York City, it's already been adopted by: the New York Sports Club, Synergy Fitness, 92nd Street YHWA, Philip Morris Corporate Gym, American Express and Lehman Brothers Corporate Gym, The Paris Health Club, New York Health and Racquet Club.

"Movement is the way to become fully conscious to the relationship between the mind, body and spirit. It is the way to become whole. Movement is not just what you see, but on a much deeper level, it is what you feel. Feelings are the language of the Spirit. Use your body to grow your Spirit!"

The Tao (pronounced Dow) of Movement is based on the Mitchell Method of Pilates. It is an actual technique to grow your spirit and create physical well-being and healing. This method, inspired by the teachings of Joseph. H. Pilates, also includes tenets of yoga, ballet, T'ai Chi, the string theory in physics and the gentle art of energy cultivation. The Tao is an eastern or Chinese philosophy that translates to mean, The Way. The ancient teachings of The Tao advocated the principles Suan Mitchell of simplicity, patience and compassion. The Tao is believed to be the most elemental and eternal force in the universe. It is the way to finding the greater force that is at the beginning of every living thing. The Tao of Movement is the way of movement. It is the truth that supports all methods of movement. It can be used to improve any person's understanding and use of their body. This ranges the gamut from professional athletes to people with special needs.

"To truly understand movement, the mind, body and spirit must integrate -- all three entities move as one."

The Tao of Movement integrates the use of proper breath technique, spinal awareness and the balance and cultivation of energy. I hold the belief that humans are energy beings. To truly understand movement, the mind, body and spirit must integrate --all three entities move as one. This is called alignment.

Alignment creates, nurtures and sustains our wholeness. Without the alignment of the mind, body and spirit the foundation of good health is compromised. The Tao of Movement combines the use of time-tested exercises with a proper understanding of the bio-mechanics of the energy body. The results are a focused mind, a balanced body and an improved state of being. Professional athletes have termed this state, "The Zone" or "Playing Real Time". I call this level of understanding and performance, The Tao of Movement. You will be amazed to learn the ease with which you can achieve this state of being. You will also be astounded by the results that you see and feel.

Try An Exercise From The Tao of Movement:

Find a quiet, comfortable spot and lay down on your back.

Take a relaxed breath in through your nose and as you exhale let the weight of your body fall into the floor like sand.

Let your body surrender to the floor and become one with it. Feel your chest and heart open and let your mind clear.

Feel your energy become calm, still and deep.

Continue to breathe easily and let your mind go to the place that you love the most in this world. It might be on a beach or by a tree or holding your child's hand. Go to that place fully and exhale to let everything else fall away from you.

Smell the air in that space and feel the fracture of light. Hear the sounds that exist there and let them fill you. Start to realize that the reason that you love this place so much is that the vibration or movement of energy that exists there is the same vibration as your energy. In this space you become more of who you truly are.

Balanced Reaching Realize that every desire you have is fulfilled here. Anxiety does not exist. There is only one of you in all of eternity and this is your space. This is your ideal state of being. This is the sanctuary of your heart and your mind. This space is the stream of energy that connects you to everything in the universe, and yet, is uniquely yours. Time as we know it does not exist here. This is the place where you will begin to see multi-dimensionally. To truly understand this you must focus your mind and feel with your heart. Then, you will see past time and space and sit in the garden of the Divine.

The Birth of Your Center

The line between body and spirit is very thin. It is like a whisper. Understanding movement is really the ability to understand the connection between the mind, body and spirit. When you understand movement, you grow awareness. Awareness is the luminous pearl that is created by the daily practice of understanding. It is the ability to see the Whole Picture; big and small. It is the moment you realize the enormous power you possess, the true beauty of humility and the desire to embrace these feelings at the same time; one having no more value than the other. Their intention is to compliment, not distract from each other. It is the blessing of feeling both sides of being. This is the birth of your center. This is the Tao of Movement.
