October 22, 2011--

College life is a balancing act whereby many students fall behind especially during final exams. To get focused for long bouts of study and perhaps all-nighters, many are now reverting to a friendly little pill called Adderall.

According to the journal Addiction, nearly 25% of university students had used Adderall as a study stimulant. Costing only a couple dollars on most campuses, Adderall is incredibly easy to afford and easily obtained.

Often called an "academic steroid," Adderall is known amongst academics as a cognitive enhancer; it is a drug that enables total mental focus on a task for extremely extended periods of time, thus making it ideal at exam crunch time.

Of great concern is that Adderall is addictive and can have noticeable withdrawal symptoms.

Studying for Exams
Exam crunch time. Many mental stimulants have been used over the years from coffee to cigarettes, to NoDoz to Black Beauties, and now Adderall is popular with today's college students.

Intended to Treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

On the surface Adderall appears benign; it's a prescription drug for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It's a combination of dextroamphetamine (dexedrine) and amphetamine and is potentially addictive.

In the U.S., approximately 5.4 million children are diagnosed with ADHD, and of those, 66% take medication like Adderall or Ritalin to control the condition. So, there's a lot of these drugs in circulation and getting into the wrong hands.

At prescribed dosage, Adderall can cause a number of side effects ranging from nervousness, restlessness, and insomnia to constipation, diarrhea, and weight loss. Of great concern is that it is addictive and can have noticeable withdrawal symptoms.

The Latest In a Long Line of Mental Stimulants

Adderall is merely the latest in a progression of artificial stimulants to get through college. For decades there have been coffee and cigarettes to stay awake as well as NoDoz, think caffeine in a pill.
Today's students' parents had their Black Beauties and diet pills to get through exam time. A lot of students in the sixties and seventies abused Black Beauties, a mixture of dextro- and levo- amphetamine, that were finally pulled off the market in 1998.
