Word:    Resting Energy Expenditure (REE)

Short Definition:
Amount of calories required for a 24-hour period

Definition:
Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) represents the amount of calories required for a 24-hour period by the body during a non-active period. Once the REE is calories per day is determined, then weight loss can occur by reducing the caloric intake by about 200 –300 calories per day, or by increasing the physical activity and maintaining the caloric intake.

A common formula for predicted energy expenditure is the Harris-Benedict equations, which takes into account gender, age, height and weight.
