  A lipid in the bloodstream.

The main fat in foods and in a common lipid in the bloodstream. Excess triglycerides are associated with a significantly increased risk of heart disease.

Triglycerides are composed of glycerol and three fatty acids. Most triglycerides are obtained from food as fats or synthesized by the liver and stored in liver and fat cells.

Triglycerides are one of three major sources of metabolic fuel (the other sources are carbohydrates and proteins) providing energy for the physiological processes of the body.

Excess triglycerides can be controlled through regular exercise. However, in extreme cases it may have to be controlled through prescription medications such as statin drugs.
