Word:    Hypertension

Short Definition:
The medical term for high blood pressure.

Definition:
Hypertension is when the blood pressure in the arteries is consistently above the normal range of 140/90.

Blood pressure is the force in the arteries when the heart beats. It's measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Hypertension is defined as blood pressure greater than or equal to 140 systolic pressure or greater than or equal to 90 diastolic pressure.

High blood pressure directly increases the risk of coronary heart disease which can potentially lead to heart attack and stroke. Hypertension is often associated with aging. There are also hereditary causes. People with diabetes mellitus, gout or kidney disease are more likely to have high blood pressure, too.
