Word:    Chromium

Short Definition:
A natural mineral required by the body

Definition:
Chromium is a mineral that humans require in trace amounts for optimal health, although its mechanisms of action in the body and the amounts needed are not well defined at this time.

Chromium is known to improve the action of insulin resistance, and it appears to also be a natural remedy for elevated blood cholesterol and triglycerides.

Chromium also appears to be directly involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism , but more research is needed to determine the full range of its roles in the body.

Supplementation:
Chromium Picolinate is the most absorbable form of chromium when taken as a supplement. Oftentimes it is taken with niacin.

Some studies have shown an increase in mean muscle mass when chromium has been supplemented. Typical doses are three 200 mcg capsules daily.

Natural Sources of Chromium:
Broccoli
Grape juice
Garlic
Basil
Turkey breast
Red wine

It is found primarily in two forms in nature:
1) "trivalent" , which is biologically active and found in food, and is good for you in the proper doses.
2) "hexavalent" is a toxic form that results from industrial pollution and is harmful to humans.
