Word:    Serotonin

Short Definition:
  A neurotransmitter that regulates mood.

Definition:
Serotonin is a hormone found in the brain, platelets, digestive tract and pineal gland. It acts both as a neurotransmitter and a vasoconstrictor.

It helps induce a feeling of fullness, and may affect emotional states such as anxiety. Depression is caused by reduced amounts of, or lack of activity causing less serotonin.

Serotonin can be elevated by eating starchy foods but that will also elevate insulin. It is best to eat lesser glycemic foods such as salmon, turkey, black eyed-peas, walnuts, almonds, and sesame or pumpkin seeds.

It is also believed that serotonin levels can be elevated consistently through regular exercise.
