The Goldilocks Theory of Fat Loss

It was on the third try that Goldilocks arrived at "just right", the same holds for you and your weight loss program.

By: King Hoover

When you were a child, did your parents tell you the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears? I heard it a bunch, but I couldn't understand why this little girl thought it was a wise idea to break into the home of a family of Bears, steal their food, trash the furniture like some rock star and then go to sleep in their beds without knowing when they'd be home. Then I discovered the secret of the story. A secret that people are spending $100 billion a year trying to achieve, the secret that would help 93% of the population sleep better at night… What is the secret of the story? Who would have thought the Fairy Tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears would be the basis of a Nobel Prize winning theory, forever giving the world the secret to…fat loss and mind-blowing fitness?

The secret of Goldilocks and the Three Bears -- that a little bit of stress in the gym with help relieve the stress of bigger clothes, less energy and worries about losing the most precious thing you own…

In 1936, Dr. Hans Selye came up with the theory of The Distress/Eustress Continuum. His theory states that too little 'stress' does not provide enough disturbance to your physical status quo to require any positive adaptations (like fat loss, strength gain, increased energy and endurance) and too much causes negative adaptations (like fat gain, strength loss, fatigue).

Ol' Dr. Selye must have been a big fan of Goldilocks because his theory is played out exactly three distinct times in the story. The first thing Goldy did was to try out three chairs, one too big, one too small and one 'just right;' then the porridge that was too hot, too cold and 'just right;' and, lastly, there was the fateful choice of beds… The same applies to your fitness program. The #1 concern for 93% of people in America is "present and future health" according to surveys by the Barna Group. Last year, people in the United States spent $100 billion dollars in their efforts to lose fat, look firmer and increase their energy levels when all they had to do was look to Goldilocks. (Or maybe Dr. Selye said it better.) Goldilocks Woods

If we want change, we have to DO enough to cause change; if it were easy to have the body you've always wanted, everyone would already have one. But like a job that has a huge salary and benefits, there are usually Big Responsibilities commensurate with Big Payoffs.

One of my newest clients told me there were some exercises she "couldn't do." I found out that "couldn't do" just meant that she didn't want to do. Once we demonstrated the benefits of performing these unappealing-but-result-producing moves, she was completely willing to experience the slight discomfort for the not-so-slight results that followed.

A second principle from our Fairy Tale Trainer is the Principle of Persistence -- you must endure the stress or pursue your goal long enough to achieve the results you desire. Was it the first chair, bowl or bed? The second? No, it was on the third try that she arrived at "just right."

When I begin working with a new client, I let them know that like their current states of weight, body fat, strength or energy took quite some time to decline to their present status; it will also take a little while to get them where they want to go. The readers of the Aledo, Texas Community News who follow the personal journey of Albert Villegas know that in seven weeks he has lost 32 pounds according the scale, but his Body Composition Test shows he has lost 38 pounds of fat and added 6 pounds of muscle.

Is it worth 12 weeks of hard work to literally change your life and your future? For Albert and his coworkers Randy and Caren who also participated in the "experiment," the answer is YES! Strength Training and appropriate cardiovascular exercise is the ONLY answer to getting lean and firm for life; nothing else makes the difference that a solid Fitness Program can.
