Aqua Massage Boosting Health Club Memberships and Profits With Dry Water Massage

Health clubs are continually searching for a market differentiator. The 'automated water massage amenity' fits the bill to a "T". This is an additional automated device, similar to tanning, that provides an invaluable member service, without the need of assigned staff, for an added revenue stream. On a per square foot basis, massage units are the most profitable offerings in the gym business.

Press Release:

Massage is in vogue across the globe, and more and more fitness centers want to add this attractive amenity, but don't want to take on the added payroll risk. The solution is automated water massage. No, the users don't get wet, they remain dry behind a supple membrane while water jets give a fingertip massage across the entire body, or concentrated in certain desired body zones.

The technology leader in this field is Aqua Massage of Connecticut and they now ship their units to over 70 countries - in fact, it is the same device used by the Miami Heat professional basketball team.

Making Waves At a California Health Club

There is one health club in California that is boosting its revenues, not only with tanning, but also with Aqua Massage. Wishing to remain anonymous from his neighboring competitors, the owner recently told his success story to FitCommerce.com.

His fitness club is your typical mid-sized, middle niche club offering an array of selectorized machines, cardio machines, tanning, classroom studio complete with spinning and Pilates, and of course Aqua Massage.

Members enjoy the added amenity of Aqua Massage at fitness centers, not to mention the added profit center for the owners.

The Dry Water Massage Was An Immediate Hit

There are 2 Aqua Massage systems at this location. Members pay $15 per month for unlimited use of the machines. Currently, about 20% of the members pay the premium for the use of the massage units.

However, the owner readily admits its equally appealing to have something no other fitness facility has in his market area. Massage is a benefit that most member-prospects can understand and appreciate, and offering it can help close additional memberships.

The trick is to have the units in a separate room with plenty of windows for public viewing. "We have this enclosed room with glass windows so people can see in, and see the machines. People are intrigued by them. That's a big seller, to have those windows in there, " the owner said.
Unlike tanning, which requires a private room surrounding the tanning unit, Aqua Massage units can not only be displayed through windows, but also the winning formula seems to be to have 2 units side-by-side.

That way it becomes somewhat of a social event with buddies or significant others taking massages together. This owner has his units pre-programmed to last 10 minutes in duration which is ideal for health clubs.

How Aqua Massage Works

Aqua Massage Body Profiler
There is a touch screen Body Profiler where users can adjust water pressure, pulsation or select any of the 12 separate body zones from feet to neck to concentrate on.
Aqua Massage is a self-contained unit that is roughly 8' long by 3' wide covered by an acrylic canopy covering the massage bed. It runs on a standard 220 electrical outlet and requires no plumbing.

The member is fully clothed, and a waterproof membrane keeps the person totally dry and yet it's supple enough to allow for a deep massage. Spray bars encircle the user, allowing a full surface massage on three sides of the body.

There is an inverted V-shaped spray bar with 36 water jets that horizontally travels back and forth, massaging the full length of the body. It can be programmed to adjust water pressure, temperature, and pulsating frequency as well as target specific areas of the body to concentrate on.

A Similar Process to Tanning

Club owners and managers need not worry about complicating their operations with a water massage operation. "We keep an appointment book for Aqua Massage similar to tanning. Having two beds alleviates any kind of problem with people waiting. They sign up on a little table."

When do people normally take a massage? "More do it after a workout, but some do it to loosen up just before. We even have some people that will go out at night, they come to the club formally dressed with their wives, and they'll take a massage after they've gone out for dinner. "

The policy at this club is that members can come in anytime. "As long as they take their shoes off, and make sure there is nothing in their pockets, they're good to go!"

Why Hire A Masseur?

As opposed to the living person giving a massage, whose value is immeasurable in massage therapy and targeting specific muscle ailments, the typical post workout body rubdown is just as easily given by these marvelous machines.

The machines are exceedingly reliable. In the unlikely occurrence of a problem, the manufacturer's support center often rectifies most right over the phone. So the machines are on call, ready and eager to serve the members, seven days a week, with no advance notice.

And, according to the owner, "The beauty is you don't have to hire anybody, the two machines are your employees."

High Return on Investment

At most clubs, floor space is a premium, so every investment is judged on what it can bring in given its space requirements. "In that square footage, I don't know if there's anything else that I could put in there that could make that kind of return. It's a small footprint, you would be surprised how small of a space the Aqua Massage can fit into.

Great Service and a Class Act

According to the club owner, who has a lengthy history with Aqua Massage, "Dave and Hilaire Cote founded Aqua Massage many years ago and built it into a class act. They really care about their customers and they do a great job. That's important for club owners to know. You're investing a certain amount of money to buy these beds, it's important to know that you're getting treated fairly. "
Aqua Massage
Aqua Massage units are easy to install, they takes up surprisingly little space, requires no plumbing and runs on standard 220 v circuits.
As a final word, he went on, " Would I buy additional Aqua Massage machines? The answer is 'Yes'. As we expand and add more clubs, that is something we will definitely be doing, is outfitting them all with Aqua Massage."
