Real (Grunting) Men vs. Planet Fitness Gyms

A flip remark like "Tampon Tuesday" can really get the ire of fitness chain up. Albert Argibay allegedly let out a grunt while working out at Planet Fitness, set off the "Lunk Alarm", and was dismissed from the club by the general manager. Argibay was so irrated he went on the air to tell his side of the story. Now Planet Fitness is giving the rebuttal.

What's your opinion? : Tell us what you think by writing a review. merely click on the "Write a Review" link at the very bottom of this page.

Just when you think the health club business has become perfunctory, a seemingly nebulous incident explodes on the national scene.

Earlier this month 40-year-old Albert Argibay, a bodybuilder and a state correction officer, was at a Planet Fitness gym in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., when he let out, to him at least, a seemingly innocuous grunt.

Argibay was doing squats at the time with 500 pounds of weight on his shoulders and set off the Lunk Alarm (Planet Fitness has an alarm that goes off when people violate the grunting, screaming, and weight slamming etiquette).

"They didn't tell him it was Free Tampon Tuesday and Curves would not accept your membership even with proof of zero testosterone levels."

Albert Argibay

Albert Argibay (above) allegedly caused quite a stir at a Planet Fitness. He claims he only grunted once, but it set off the Lunk Alarm, and got him terminated from the club.
The Planet Fitness club manager walked over and told him it was time to leave. Mr. Argibay, the manager explained, had violated one of the club's most sacred and strictly enforced rules: He was grunting.

Soon Argibay was surrounded by town police officers, who told him to drop the weight slowly and pack his bag, then escorted him from the gym.

Now Mr. Argibay is considering suing the club, (he has retained an attorney) claiming the notoriety the incident in this 5,000-person town 75 miles north of Manhattan is tantamount to defamation.

This isolated incident soon hit the New York Times and the Bob Rivers Radio Show, syndicated out of Seattle, Washington.

Suddenly Argibay and Planet Fitness were in the national limelight. The icing was perhaps when attorney Jason L. Stearn made a flip comment about "Tampon Tuesday" an apparent reference that real men should be able to grunt.
Well apparently Planet Fitness was infuriated enough by the Bob Rivers radio show to issue the below press release. We are presenting it here in its full unabridged form:

Press Release:

Planet Fitness Issues Official Response to Inaccuracies in New York Gym Grunters Claims that his Membership was Terminated For Grunting in the Gym

Planet Fitness Spokesperson says profanity, threatening, intimidating behavior are the reasons for expulsion, not grunting - "Free Tampon Tuesday" and other misogynistic comments on the Bob Rivers Radio Show by Al Argibay and his attorney are the stimulus for an official statement.

Planet Fitness today issued an official statement in response to "The Gym Grunter" Albert Argibay. "Mr. Argibay's description of what occurred is inaccurate. Continued allegations about the actions of the Planet Fitness manager are fabrications of the event as it occurred and as it was witnessed by other gym patrons," said Dave Lakhani, spokesman for Planet Fitness.

Further, "Mr. Argibay and his attorney's sophomoric and insulting treatment of people who are trying to get in shape in an environment that is supportive and judgment free is unacceptable in this day and age."

Lakhani continued: "Mr. Agribay was asked to stop his excessively loud 'grunting and screaming' as he squatted weight, by the fitness center manager Carol Palazzolo who was giving a family a tour of the fitness center.
CBS video interview of Albert Argibay and Planet Fitness

Expletives Deleted

Mr. Argibay's response was 'I'm a bodybuilder and I'll grunt if I want to', when asked again to stop the loud noise, Mr. Argibay responded 'You are a f******g B*tch, I'm not going to stop" (shouting in a loud aggressive manner, causing other gym members to approach, telling the manager that they were worried about her safety).

According to the Planet Fitness Manager involved, Carol Palazzolo, Mr. Argibay was asked to move to the front counter. Mr. Argibay continued to shout and use profanity and identified himself as a corrections officer. When told by Palazzolo that if his intimidating behavior continued that the police would be called, he said 'My f*****g boss is the Captain of the police force.' At that time the fitness center manager contacted local authorities.

When police arrived, Mr. Argibay had retired to the men's locker room at which point and after walking through the fitness facility, the police encountered him near the front desk, where he was asked to give his full name by the manager, so that his membership could be terminated and all billing stopped. Mr. Argibay refused to give his name saying to the manager, "I'm not going to make it easy for you." The police gave him direction to give his name at which time he complied. At that point his membership was cancelled.

Mr. Argibay was not arrested, no charges were filed or persued by the fitness center manager. Mr. Argibay has continually suggested that the noise he made was no louder than heavy breathing which is inaccurate according to Planet Fitness Manager Carol Palazzolo. In public statements to the media Mr. Argibay acknowledges knowing that grunting is not allowed as it is posted clearly throughout the fitness facility.

Additionally, the agreement he signed when joining the facility clearly indicates the rule. Mr. Argibay's self-identification as a law enforcement official only made the event more threatening and intimidating to the facility staff involved according to Palazzolo. Said Lakhani, "We find it somewhat concerning that a member of law enforcement would conduct themselves in this way.

We certainly realize that Mr. Argibay's actions are the exception to the rule and training of professional law enforcement everywhere but his attempt to link his position with law enforcement was intimidating to staff none the less." Mr. Argibay was previously a member of the facility and terminated his membership saying 'This isn't the right kind of place for me,' according to Palazzolo. He later reinstated his membership.

A Policy Against Attention Seeking Behavior

Planet Fitness maintains a strict policy about loud grunting, dropping weights, chest slamming and other attention seeking behavior. Over 80% of the Planet Fitness membership is derived from people who are coming back to the gym for the first time in their adult lives to get in shape.

Planet Fitness strives to make the environment, pleasant, non-threatening and supportive of those people who often feel out of place in more aggressive workout facilities. And in all cases of violations of the rule, people are light heartedly notified of the rule and asked to stop. The "Lunk Alarm" is sounded as a way of reinforcing the no grunt and judgment free zone. "

"Mr. Argibay and his attorney continue to make inflammatory and misogynistic statements to the media such as "They didn't tell him it was Free Tampon Tuesday and Curves (a well known women only gym) would not accept your membership even with proof of zero testosterone levels."

Throughout the show Mr. Argibay and his attorney insult men and women alike, demonstrating the kind of behavior that was experienced with Mr. Argibay at Planet Fitness. "We feel that these kind of sophomoric comments and insults are inappropriate and indicative of the unacceptable behavior which lead to the termination of his membership."

Planet Fitness has received a tremendous outpouring of support from members and non-members alike who applaud the no judgment, no grunting atmosphere.

Lakhani said: "In our continued commitment to fitness and healthy living, stand by our policy of creating a judgment free zone for all in all of our Planet Fitness facilities."

Common Sense Not So Common
A few years ago I considered joining a gym (I'm active duty military so I get 'free' membership to any gym on a DoD installation). When looking around I shopped 24 fitness, fitness anytime, and planet fitness (the only one within walking distance of my house). After I walked in I saw the signs. I talked with the manager when telling her I was looking for a gym. We talked for 5 minutes and after hearing all the rules I politely told her it wasn't the gym for me. I signed on with a local gym for just 18$ a month. Seriously, the rules are everywhere, you had to know what you were getting into. Do you think these rules are up for no reason? eventually someone will enforce them, so don't put yourself in that position, its your own fault if you do.

Neo Nazi Corporation
Ok so the new business model of corporate America for the last few years has been what I term empty box marketing. The theory I have goes that companies have figured out that if they decorate and empty box with enough pretty ribbons and bows they can sell it as effectively as real goods and services. People think they are buying something special when in fact it is just an empty box. I bring this because I just left a Groton, CT Planet Fitness. Now I travel a lot and have been working out for 34 years. I have been to every sort of gym imaginable from an all-women’s “Curves” I talked my way into for a day to Venice Beach gym where the pro’s workout. I have never been to a gym where I felt I was intimidated and in fact at everyone without exception I have found pleasant helpful enthuiastic members as the majority. I am a very fit 52 yo but not a real big guy and I pretty much just go in, keep to myself, do a hard work out and am polite enough to re rack my weights, not hog machines or leave gear lying on the workout floor for others to trip over, clean my sweat off the equipment and I don’t wear offensive clothing that lets my private parts hang out. Today I was finishing up and stretching when the gym manager came over and pointed out that I was wearing a head rag. I have been for the last 3 days now. Apparently hat is not allowed under their marketing banner but I see guys wearing watch caps everyday now that it has gotten cold so I looked around and pointed at the 500+lbs of weight someone left on the leg press a small women was struggling to unload so she could use it, the 200+lbs left on one of the benches with no one around, the dumbbells left on the floor, the 3 guys wearing watch caps and asked “so those things are ok but a head rag to keep the sweat out of my eyes is ‘judged’ unacceptable?” and pointed to the giant No Judgment Zone Sign painted in garish purple letters across the wall of the gym. He looked at me, blinked a couple of times and said “It’s gym policy”. I just caved and left. The machine is just too inane to deal with on a holiday. For the first time in 34 years I left the gym feeling more stressed than when I got there. Planet Fitness is truly an obscenity in the world of fitness.

PF is the Death of Old School Gyms
Wow! PF corporate should be ashamed of itself. The best gym that I ever belonged to was a Golds Gym one mile from my house. This gym closed in 2001, and I was very sad to see it go. We had bodybuilders, powerlifters, local strongman competitors, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and the occasional 40 year old soccer mom trying to shed 15 or 20 pounds before summer began. The guy, his name was Jason, was a laid back young man in his late twenties, an avid bodybuilder, and a family man. Everyone really did respect each other. Yes, there was plenty of grunting, sweating, and the occasional bloody nose from those lifting the heaviest weights. People could be themselves without being offensive to other people. Can't slam weights at PF??? I would like to see anyone do an end of workout intense set of 140 pound dumbbell incline bench presses, and lightly place the weight down in complete exhaustion. Yeah right!! HA HA! The owner Jason and a few of the biggest strongest guys in the gym were stand up guys, and were definitely NOT meatheads. I remember them offering unconditional support and encouragement to a woman in her 30's, whom had just completed her last round of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The treatments worked, but left her weaker than a kitten. These guys would literally put their workouts on hold when she entered the gym. They would show her the best exercises to build strength and muscle size, would guide her in making sure that she was doing the exercises with good form so that she wouldn't injure herself. After every workout, Jason would mix her up one of his high protein (60g) weight gainer shake (700 nutrient filled calories per large styrofoam cup!). She would always try to pay for the drink, and Jason would always tell her not to worry about it because it was "on the house". Now try to tell me that this gym had an intimidating atmosphere! It was merely a gym of some big guys with big hearts who happened to lift big weights, and grunted while doing so. Yes, they often did slam heavy weights down when their highly fatigued muscles would give out halfway while completing their last repitition. Did anyone care? Nope. Did anyone ever feel intimidated or fear for their own safety. No way in hell! PF.... THE JUDGEMENT ZONE!
by Lee
Judgement Free...for some people
So Planet Fitness claims to be judgement free, unless you're lifting heavy weights and you make some noise (something that is encouraged to the point of being mandatory in almost every martial art, by the way). It's a legitimate exercise tool, not attention seeking behavior.
by Todd
great place lunks!
Planet Fitness is great! We have some grunters and power lifters in my PF, but the idea of keeping it down! is a very good one. If you must complain, or be impolite, then stay out, of course! If you just keep it to yourself, you'll be OK. Terminated members are just rude, so get over it.

PF and everyones thoughts
This is a great gym for someone who is just trying to stay fit, hence the name. If you are training for specific reason and this gym doesnt have what you want then go to another gym. Its 10 dollars a month and designed to have a relaxed atmosphere for people getting back in shape. Its a completely different demographic then the people posting here.

You're f*&^%$# kidding me?!?!
So no sh!t, there I was... My room mate and I are both into powerlifting, myself relatively new to the sport. Having known nothing else about Planet Fitness other than the cheap fees we walked in there today to sign up. I give them my information, and the woman behind the counter walks out to give us a tour. Right off the bat she tells us that the gym is a "judgement-free" zone that doesn't cater to bodybuilders or powerlifters. I stop her right there and ask her what she means. Now before I go on, I understand the company's approach and all that, but this next part blew my mind. She told us they DO NOT allow deadlifts and powercleans or any kind of exercise such as those. I, in shock, asked her to repeat herself. I heard right. They don't allow some of the best types of exercises, regardless of fitness goal, that one could do. Correct me if I'm wrong, but since when are complex exercises limited only to bodybuilders and powerlifters? I was doing deadlifts and power cleans before I was even slightly interested in the world of powerlifting. Sounds to me like this company knows nothing about bodybuilders and powerlifters except the stereotypes that they hear and hype up. I could care less about what people in a gym think about me, and I don't think anything about who's in the gym with me. I'm in there to lift, lift heavy, and then lift even heavier. Sounds like the person/people who started this gym have always had a grudge against those of us who lift heavy, no matter what our goal is. It is literally mind numbing that a business like this has been able to succeed in this day and age. Way I see it? If you're in the gym and you feel like you're being intimidated by how or how much someone else is lifting, then you're spending entirely too much time focused on them and not nearly enough on yourself and your own workout. You've got two options at that point.... Get to work, on whatever goal you're working to obtain, or get the hell out of the gym and stay out. Stop spending so much time worrying about other people and worry about yourself.

PF IS GAY
I go to PF all the time and people throw weights and grunts constantly and no "lunk" alarm is set off. The pussies who want to go and do cardio stay out of the way anyway so who cares if a someone grunts, grunting helps me push myself that much harder. My PF actually shut down one day because of "insufficient staff", they don't even have enough people working there to keep the damn place open. what a bunch of fags.

if you dont like it...go to another gym!!!!!!
I'm 32 yrs old. Ive been working out regularly since i was 15. I managed Gold's gym in Vegas for a few yrs, owned a World Gym for 4 yrs and have owned 2 Planet Fitness Gyms for 3 yrs. I have 2 point of views on this, one from an owners perspective and one from a members view. First from an ownwer/manager the PF business model absolutly crushes WG as well as Gold's. My view from a member is simple...if you don't like the rules GO JOIN ANOTHER GYM!!! Stop all the crying. Everyone is told about the PF policies when they join and even if they claim they were not told there are signs posted all over the gym explaining the rules. If there are so many peolpe out there that think they could run a gym better go start your own franchise. But we all know that will never happen. These people will just continue to bitch and act as if they can do better. Oh and I forgot to mention that I hold a couple power lifting records and I'm usually one of, if not the strongest person (pound for pound) in the gym and i have no problem working out at PF. The only people that have a problem are the ones who think they are bigger and stronger than they really are. I never grunt or slam weights. Like I said at the begining if you don't like it go join another join and stop your cry baby B.S. Also I bet its just a matter of time before the PF in your area buys out the Golds or WG anyway so you better get your meathead workouts in while you still can!!!

I'm just a bit confused...
Let me first say that I've never personally been to a Planet Fitness, but have nuclear family members that confirm all of the complaints made about it. I am very perplexed by the notion of a "judgment free gym." Sorry, but as a race, humans are always going to be judging one another no matter how much we all deny it. Furthermore, we ALL judge by looks, otherwise nobody would even be going to a gym to get in shape. There would be no motivation! Do you think that all of the people in that gym are working out solely for themselves and no other reason? No! They are looking for positive attention from others, hence judgment. I think if people just admitted this and quit pretending they think of everybody as exactly the same, the world would be a better place. Judgment free... yeah, right.
by Average Joe
Get your facts straight, meatheads
To Jeff: If you knew how to read you'd understand the contract, that was also well explained to you during you sign up. Did you pay attention or were you staring at the girl on the treadmill? To Ray: You can also cancel in person (without a letter you idiot). To All: They don't revoke your membership for grunting, but if you get aggressive when they ask you to stop you will have your membership revoked (Meathead from Wappinger Falls can confirm that...even though he'll spin the story as: his membership was revoked for heavy breathing. Albert Argibay is a Liar and common sense will tell you that without even knowing the details. Heavy breathing...what an idiot. Finally, there are plenty of meatheads still at PF. I wish we could get rid of them all. Go to Gold's already, and stop being so cheap. If it is your passion in life, go to a gym where you can grunt and impress your other grunting buddies. Although that's not why you go is it? Meatheads are always the ones who uncomfortably stare at the women and think their gym "show" and little roid weiner is impressive to them. Grow up.
by doesn't matter
I work for PF
I work for Planet Fitness currently and everything negative said about this gym is a SCAM! First of all, everything that everyone is complaining about is EXPLAINED before signing up. In the tour given of our gym, we specifically tell you what the "LUNK ALARM" is and why we ring it. Also the yearly fee is to ensure your rates don't go up even if we change them! Also under the lunk alarm it is clearly defined what it is so thats stupid if you don't know! One more thing, we are sure to tell you that "most of our users are first time gym users and we stress the importance of general fitness rather than cater to body building" so if you're a body builder go back to Gold's Gym! dumbasses!
by Jeff
Scam
Much like others, Planet Fitness duped me into there membership and then started charging my card randomly. In a 5 week period I was charged $30 for a start up fee (I agreed to that), 2 monthly charges, and today charged for a "yearly" fee. When I signed up, I was told the $30 start up fee would cover me for 1 year. Also, shouldn't a yearly fee be charged after a year? I was told at the local Planet Fitness there was nothing I could do about it and if I dropped my membership I would be out the $80 I had already paid for 1 MONTH of membership. Beyond that, it’s impossible to get a hold of the corporate level to talk to anyone. To make it worse, when I walked into the gym they were running a special for $1 sign up. After asking about that, the front desk just answered "bad timing on your part." Thanks....

My 2c
This pf joint sounds pretty ridiculous but I can't help thinking that this whole confrontation was orchestrated by the member who was looking to cash in on a frivolous lawsuit or at least get some attention.

"Certified Letter"
My wife signed up for Planet Fitness about a year ago. Soon afterward she had shoulder surgery and, of course, could not use the facility for quite some time. I read the "fine print" of their contract and it says you have to send them a "certified letter" in order to cancel a membership. I questioned why and sent them a cancellation letter via regular mail. The billing continued so I called and was told if I hadn't sent the letter via "certified mail" they "probably didn't get it". BULL. I bet they get mail everyday that is not certified. The phone, water and power companies don't send certified mail. It's a gimmick to collect a couple of EXTRA months payments. So I hand delivered the letter and made them sign for it. A company that pulls this type of BS is run by dishonest people. Be wary....

Planet Fitness Orange City, Fl the judgment zone!!
I joined the Planet Fitness club near my house in Orange City, Florida and I regret doing so. From the very start the personal trainer humiliated everyone by yelling out in front of the whole gym that you were doing an exercise wrong. This is a no judgment zone -I don't think so. I know that several members complained about this person and he stopped that, but he is still there. He is like the gym nazi -he just looks for something to bother you about. He told me the other day I didn't wipe my bench down after working out -which I did. He told my friend she wiped the machine down incorrectly -please. Friends save time and money and steer clear of this gym. Also I can say that I have seen the personal trainer working out and he doesn't know what he is doing unless jerking the weights up on the bicep curl is good form. Yeah. Also being 50 pounds overweight isn't a good thing for a personal trainer either. And the place is just gross. One time I saw a guy poping his zits in the mirror. One guy had BO so bad I could smell it 50 feet away. Yeah I know this is gym and people sweat but it you smell that bad get some deodorant and good soap -this is really offensive to others. And it is a real turn off to see people get on the cardio machines for a half hour and then get off and start working out on the exercises with their sweat dripping all over the machines. Couldn't you just work out on the machines before you do your cardio. So if none of these thing turns you off then by all means pay your $10 a month and go for it. I personally have no desire to work out in this enviroment. I am a successfull business person and I would never treat my customers like this. Also please note that if you go to their web site there is no way to contact the corporate office. This should tell you something.

Bye Bye Planet Fitness!
I just turned in my notice at Planet Fitness in Clearwater, FL....What a great feeling! I have tolerated this place since it took over a decent World Gym, until another gym was built, close to home. I have witnesses Planet Fitness ring the "lunk alarm" at people when weight stacks were stuck together and came crashing down - not the user's fault obviously. This gym has also started picking out members whom they don't want anymore. Like someone else said, they want the kind of members who pay and don't go. I still can't believe a gym of all places, has 'pizza night and bagel morning'. Their excuse for removing pull-up bars was that 80% of the population can't do a single pull-up, and the bars were 'intimidating' to their 'target population'. What a joke. I won't miss this place at all...

What's the deal with this judgement free nonsense
Planet fitness is devouring the modestly priced, real gyms. My Gold's Gym membership became a Planet Fitness membership a few years back. A little while after the takeover all of the real equipment started being moved out and I've lost quite a bit of weight since. I'm now stuck with a choice of NYSC, Equinox, or Dolphin, all of which have plenty of useless nonsense I'm not interested in. Fantastic, I have to pay $800 a year for a squat rack. And another thing. This judgement free stuff is a ruse. Even when I was a toothpick I never had any type of judgement problem in the lifters pits. In fact, the muscle heads are usually very helpful, informative, and friendly. If you need advice on how to get big and strong fast, who better to ask then the guy with 800 pounds on his shoulders?

A place for those who would otherwise never walk i
I am totally sold on the PF concept!! For some years I have wanted to get into taking better care of myself, but my only options were to exercise at home where I really didn't have the floor space to maintain exercise equipment or to walk outside in the elements which in my area aren't always appealing. Choices where I felt comfortable were very few and really were limited to ladies only gyms, which left my husband out. Since this is something that both my husband and I are doing together, it feels really good to walk in a place that there are people who feel the need to get in shape without feeling intimidated by those who are feel they are a testament to health. Mr. Argibay was probably inticed by PF's low fees and if he didn't understand PF's rules upon entering, well to me he IS a lunkhead. By the sounds of a few of the other comments, I have to conclude that it must feel funny for those of you in shape to have the shoe on the other foot.

PF is a JOKE!
Talk about not feeling comfortable. People get punished because they are strong and dedicated. I understand nobody has the right to judge, but our society makes it far to easy for people to think it is okay to be overweight and lazy. Do them a favor PF and give them what they really need, a reality check. Not free pizza Tuesdays. In the end its a business gimic to get as many 9.99 memberships as t

I support PF
PF is a gym for people who feel out of place in body bulider gyms. The man who was kicked out knew about the rules when he joined. He could have predicted that PF wasn't the gym for him and went someplace else. I joined PF months ago and find it a refreshing change from other gyms. PF is unique in that way. Body Builder's have many options but some other people do not.
